Most of the time color was printed, I could care less. I ran actual tests to see how much I was spending per page and it turned out to be about 25 cents per page! Crazy! This exercise made me realize how little I was using the color features of my ink jet printer. I was getting eaten alive on ink costs for my fancy Canon. SAVE MONEY: Buy your toner on Amazon, or price match the Amazon price at Staples, Office Depot, etc. Love my Brother printer and will never go back to HP. This was the final straw for me when I switched from HP to Brother. Finally, HP printers now force you to replace your ""color"" cartridges when they are used up or dry out (even if you only print in black ink) otherwise, your HP printer won't work-even if you leave the empty color cartridges in the printer. HP printers will usually cost you anywhere from 4 to 10 cents per page to print, after you factor in maintenance costs-which HP usually ""forgets"" to tell you. These Brother laser printers do NOT waste toner for such tasks, and do NOT dry out. HP printers also use a lot of ink for "" maintenance"" tasks, like cleaning the print heads. Also, the toner doesn't dry up (like HP ink printers). The drum unit adds 1/2 cent per page for costs, and must be replaced after 30,000 pages have been printed. The Brother 8710 model uses the TN 750 high-capacity toner cartridge (like the 8810 & 8910), bringing your cost down to 1.5¢ per page (including the cost of the drum unit)-and prints 8000 pages.

The high capacity cartridge for the Brother 7860 model (TN 450) will cost you 2 to 3 cents per page to print-and prints 2600 pages.
